A Celebration of Another Fantastic Term at Wakefield Girls’

1st April 2025

This term has been an extraordinary wonderful showcase of our students’ diverse talents and commitment. Mrs. Tingle’s end of term assembly celebrated a range of achievements, from remarkable sporting achievements to outstanding artistic and academic accomplishments.

Our athletes have excelled on both local and national stages. The U16 and U19 netball squads reached the prestigious England Netball National Schools Finals, while the U15 team secured a spot in the top four for their age range group in the Sisters in Sport Cup Finals. Individual successes included Lilly’s badminton achievements, Tilly’s team’s runners-up position in the Badminton British league, and Lucy and Amelia’s selection for the ICO England martial arts team. Bea and her team’s victory in the U16 Girls National Rugby Union semi-finals further highlighted our students’ incredible sporting abilities. Click here to read more about our amazing sports teams.

Beyond the sports field, our students have demonstrated exceptional talent in music. The Young Musicians of the Year competition saw 222 students perform, with Rebecca and Lauren being named as our Young Musicians of the Year. The House Dance finals showcased incredible high energy and creativity, with winning groups from each year delivering captivating strong performances.

Our students’ academic and problem-solving skills were also on display in the Rotary Technology Tournament, where they tackled complex STEM challenges, and in the highly competitive Junior Section Spelling Bee, concluded with an exciting final.

Additionally, our students have shown a deep commitment to community and charity. Culture Day raised funds for the Yorkshire Children’s Charity, while students and staff participated in the Wakefield Hospice 10k and a sponsored Zumba to support Wakefield Hospice. Our school also joined Hands Across Wakefield to celebrate the Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust’s 125th anniversary and the invaluable service they provide to our community.

Educational trips enriched our students’ learning experiences, with A-level Geography students exploring the Yorkshire Wolds and Year 8 Classics students immersing themselves in the history of Pompeii, bringing their knowledge and understanding back to the classroom.

Our students have also benefited from the insights and inspiration shared by our alumnae. First Friday subject talks, career talks, and the International Women’s Day panel featuring Anshini Thakur, Hilary Carver, Michelle Kirchner, Sangeeta Unnikrishnan, and Kelly Nicoll empowered our students to pursue their dreams and dream big.

Finally, we celebrated the appointment of Priya and Ophelia as Junior Section Head Girl and Deputy Head Girl. We now eagerly anticipate the announcement of our new Senior Section Head Girl team during Friday’s assembly.

This term’s achievements are a testament to our students’ hard work, passion, and dedication. We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and look forward to their continued success. We are also saying farewell to Mr. Webster at the end of this term, a truly dedicated and inspiring maths teacher who has always been there for students and supported and inspired students since joining in 2019. We wish him the very best of luck in his future endeavours and thank him greatly for all he has done since being at WGHS.
