You’ll like the way we encourage MUSICAL TALENT from symphony to song.

The key element of musical development is encouragement. We give every student the opportunity to take part in musical performances, recitals and concerts, whatever her ability or experience. The school calendar is filled with around 15 musical events each year, formal and informal with weekly Brass On The Grass, pop-up ensembles which bring students and staff together, termly concerts showcasing impressive pieces and annual highlights such as our colourful choral and orchestral concerts in wonderful Wakefield Cathedral.

We make it easy to pick up an instrument.

With 18 musical groups of different range and ability, ranging from concert bands, a brass band, wind band, swing band, string quartet, a variety of ensembles and choral groups, there’s something here for all students. We support girls in learning an instrument with over 400 weekly lessons taught in our 8 individual music classroom spaces by Visiting Instrumental Musicians.

Tuition is available on the following instruments:

  • Woodwind: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone and Bassoon
  • Brass: Trumpet, Cornet, French Horn, Tenor Horn, Euphonium, Trombone and Tuba
  • Strings: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Classical Guitar, Electric Guitar
  • Keyboard: Piano and Organ
  • Percussion: Drum Kit and Orchestral Percussion
  • Voice

Practices & Performances

Music runs through our school and is taught at every stage. Our Juniors have their own dedicated music room and our Seniors, a dedicated music building and recording studio. Our vibrant Music department offers opportunities for students of all ages to perform in, direct and manage concerts. In addition to timetabled lessons, a wide range of independent music lessons support students to improve their practise and develop their skills.

Nurturing a talent and a taste for performance.

Every year, an array of concerts take place in our school halls and externally at Wakefield Cathedral, on our Music Tour and often at seasonal events such as Christmas at Pinderfields Hospital as well as at Music Festivals.  Our Junior Choir often brings home the trophy from the annual Wharfedale Music Festival.  Sometimes, our Junior musicians are joined by our youngest musicians in Wakefield Grammar Pre-Preparatory School. Through these performances, our students learn to express themselves clearly and confidently while building friendships through shared musical experiences.

Wider Experiences

Our musicians also become involved in directing and conducting our many performances. If your daughter has specific musical interests please let us know when you visit. We will be happy to help.
