Football Assembly: Empowering Girls through Football

17th November 2023

Today’s assembly put the spotlight on women’s football  with Deputy Head, Mr Eggleston, interviewing various players in our football team about how football is helping empower women and girls around the world.

We are excited to see several members of our football team also playing for prestigious and other local clubs including England Futures, Leeds United, Huddersfield Town, Doncaster Rovers, Barnsley, SAFG, Wombwell, Battyeford Belles, Penistone Church and Dukar. It was an inspiring morning, with our student speaker’s encouraging their peers to pursue the sport.

At Wakefield Girls’ our football club has run sporadically for a number of years. Historically, it has always been a recreational club. It is our intention over this academic year to make the transition to becoming a competitive club, offering more fixtures and really building on the team ethos.

We have two brilliant squads at U13 and U16.

We’re encouraging as many students as possible to get involved and play football at Wakefield Girls’. Not only is it great exercise, supporting both physical and mental health; it is also a great social opportunity to make connections and experience the joyous camaraderie that comes with playing ‘the beautiful game’. We are looking forward to our House Football competition this year!

Since September we have already played Bruntcliffe, with more fixtures in the pipeline. Whilst we were unlucky against Bruntcliffe, there were some great positives and some really clear areas of development.  We are looking to enter local competitions in the coming months, with a view to entering national competitions in the next few years.

For those interested, on a Thursday lunchtime we offer recreational 5 a side football, which is available for anyone to attend. We also offer squad training on Wednesday’s after school, where we look at key skills and how we can implement these into a game. These sessions are available for students willing to play in our competitive fixtures, so some understanding of the game is necessary so that we can get ready for matches.
