One of the highlights of the year here at Wakefield Girls’ is the appointment of our Senior Prefects, Deputy Head Girl, Head Girl and Heads of Houses. Following a rigorous application process including hustings and voting, these important and prestigious roles are appointed each summer term. Our student leaders in these positions have many responsibilities across the school. They represent Wakefield Girls’ at public facing events, they represent our student body, they support staff and serve as role models offering valuable support and insight.
As is tradition, our newly appointed incoming team were welcomed and congratulated in assembly in Jubilee Hall. It is wonderful to be all together for such a significant occasion.
Head, Heidi-Jayne Boyes said: “I have been really impressed with the care and thought which has been invested into the whole application process for all of these roles, by all candidates. It is a real privilege to be involved in the process, to read the letters of application and gain an insight into what motivates each candidate. This motivation always centres around giving something back to the school and living our school values. Everyone who applied for one of these positions talked about our sense of community, of spirit and of wanting to be a role model for others.
In searching for the right candidates a key attribute is a student with ambition and hope.
Anyone appointed into one of these roles is given the opportunity to create, organise, develop and execute initiatives and events that are tailor made to their own House, particular area of responsibility, section or School.
For our Heads of House they must not only be individuals equipped with the enthusiasm and desire to rally their House and aim to win the coveted House trophy, but they also must consider the needs of their whole House. The Head Girl and her team must consider the needs of the whole school and be collaborative, working as a team with integrity and maturity.
Regardless of the role they all have to be kind and considerate to all, yet be authentic, decisive and determined to lead as well as they possibly can. They have a few other things in common too but also have many different qualities, skills and strengths which I know will make the outcomes even better.”
