Our Year 3 girls were able to take their Science learning outside the classroom this week by visiting Meanwood Valley Urban Farm in Leeds. It was an exciting opportunity to bring some hands-on practical experience to their learning, and the focus of the trip was to investigate rocks & soil and their properties.
The farm is a beautiful place to visit and we began with a geological tour. During this the girls discovered a range of rocks of different ages which helped them begin to understand the weathering process and how the environment can impact rocks. By the time the tour was over, the girls had the knowledge and confidence to identify features on rocks that help to identify their age.
Next the students headed for the farm’s classrooms for a range of experiments, before turning their inquisitive minds to the properties of soil in the afternoon, including making their own soil. However, the clear highlight for many was making their own wormery, which the girls brought back with them to school.
Our youngest students were a real credit to the school, being well-behaved and demonstrating wonderful manners throughout the trip. We would like to thank all the staff at Meanwood Valley Urban Farm for being so brilliant and really helping to enrich our students’ learning.
