Year 5 Practise Public Speaking: Assembly Swap With QEGS

23rd April 2024

Over the past two weeks our Year 5 students at Wakefield Girls’ Junior Section have participated in an ‘assembly swap’ with the Year 5 students at brother school QEGS.

On Monday 15th April, 5SM made the short walk over to QEGS Junior Section to present a well-prepared assembly on the residential trips they have been on over the past 3 years whilst in Juniors. They recounted fond memories, funny stories and how the trips supported their classroom learning.

This week, on Monday 22nd it was 5AB’s turn to deliver an assembly to QEGS students. The assembly focused on the visitors and special events we enjoy here at WGHS Junior Section.

The students all spent time independently creating their slides and scripts for this prior to the assembly day, writing about all the wonderful occasions and guests we have here in school. Students discussed a variety of delightful traditions: from Ark Animal and the Chocolate Factory, to Sports Day and our Spring Concert.

Whilst these two assemblies happened at QEGS, the rest of WGHS Junior Section were treated to assemblies from the QEGS students who visited St. John’s House to share their school traditions and favourite events.

This joint venture was a valuable opportunity for our Year 5 students to practise their public speaking skills and develop their confidence, as it was understandably daunting for some of our students to speak in front of a large unfamiliar audience for the first time. Well done to all our Year 5 students, and a big thank you to the Year 5 QEGS students who visited our school and spoke so eloquently about their experiences.
