Our Student Union for 2023/2024

10th November 2023

Last month we held our SRSU Hustings, to establish our new SRSU members for the academic year 2023/2024.

Our Student’s Union, named SRSU (Sotterly Ross Student Union) was launched in 2019 and is fully affiliated to the NUS (the national union for university and college students). It provides students with the opportunity to have their voice heard and to influence changes they would like to make to Sixth Form life – reinforcing our school values of being aware and empowered – encouraging student’s to make a difference for the better, not only for themselves but also for future students.

A ‘hustings’ is a meeting where Student Union candidates introduce themselves and the principles they stand for, and answer questions from the audience. Hustings provide Sixth Form voters with an opportunity to hear the views of their candidates, what policies or changes they want to bring about and make an informed decision when voting for who they want to represent them.

Here Year 13 student Katie S, President of the SRSU for 2023-2024, introduces the SRSU team:

I’m so excited to introduce our new student union team for 2023/24!

Having been a part of the student union last year, I am looking forward to continuing its legacy for another year and making meaningful changes within our Sixth Form community. I hope that the rest of the Sixth Form and students in Wakefield Girls’ will be able to enjoy the events that we will organise this year.

Some of our aims are to continue running charity events, promote wellbeing by organising fun activities for all members of the school community and to listen to the ideas and hopes of fellow Sixth Form students in order to make necessary changes to provide a welcoming environment for all.

I am happy to announce that on our team this year we have Amelia in the role of Vice President, Sophia as Treasurer, Zara in the role of Charities Officer, Katie H for the LGBTQ+ officer and last but not least Madison in the role of Media and Promotions.

I’m sure that all of our new officers will do an excellent job running the Student Union for 2023/24 and I am excited to work with them. Finally, I am looking forward to the upcoming Re-open Nominations and to welcoming the successful candidates to our team.
