Swing Foundation at Marsden Jazz Festival

10th October 2023

Swing Foundation were the opening act at the Marsden Fringe Festival at Hanson’s Music Shop, which runs alongside the world renowned Marsden Jazz Festival.  Marsden hosts performances and interactive activities in many indoor and outdoor venues throughout the village every October.

22 pupils performed from Years 10-13, 7 students from Wakefield Girls’, alongside 15 students from QEGS. The collaborative and friendly nature of the band allows for and encourages Wakefield Girls’ students to work together and make friendships with a range of students across the Foundation.

The band was led by the new QEGS Director of Music, Mr Jarvis. They played a variety of popular big band charts, including It’s Not Unusual with the distinctive vocals of Michael Dube, Soul Bossa Nova (of Austin Powers fame) and the Mission Impossible theme.

Several pupils took impressive improvised solo breaks. Mr Urbanski also accompanied two of his students in solo items.  The rip-roaring finale was an impressive medley of complex but very catchy film music from The Incredibles.
