As our academic year ended, the action began for our sports students and staff who headed off to South Africa for an incredible Sports Tour. We are always delighted to offer a Wakefield Girls’ Sports Tour – the spirit encapsulates everything right at the heart of school life: camaraderie, relationships and empowering our students. Organised around an action packed fixture list, our netballers and hockey players also enjoyed time for lots of non sporting highlights too.
Warming up with a brilliant cultural drumming experience, we went on to win all games played on our first day. During the Sports Tour, we enjoyed fiercely contested matches against teams from the Langa Township, the highlight of which was the coolest lunch in the heart of the township and a tour which highlighted to us all the opportunities that sport can bring to everybody’s lives. Special thanks to St Mary’s Waverley and to La Rochelle for some fabulous hockey and netball in the beautiful South African winter sun – amazing memories and friendships made.
Tiredness did not stop our Sports Tour team from enjoying plenty of wonderful opportunities: from waking to brilliant blue skies and a magnificent morning literally on top of the world at Table Mountain to meeting the penguins at Boulders bay; visiting Simonstown, Cape of Good Hope, learning so much at the Apartheid Museum and enjoying a fabulous night out at GOLD Restaurant with Inspire Sport. Excitement was punctuated mid week by the one and only amazing George Ezra who was at our lodgings for the night…what a gentleman !! With increasing animal sightings (giraffes and elephants) – and the best duet by our very own Antonia and Mrs Manson – the tour just kept getting better day by day. Many incredible memories and relationships were made.
