PPE & Scrub Hub Update

21st April 2020

While school is quiet as students learn safely at home, The Design and Technology Workshop at Wakefield Girls’ High School continues to buzz with the efforts of our dedicated teachers manufacturing PPE.

Brent Carlin, Head of D&T has halved manufacturing time of the face shield part of the visors by using our school laser cutter and has recently improved production efficiency of the headband component by moving production to our 3D printers, leaving them to operate 24/7.

“We are sending out PPE as quickly as we make it,” reports Brent. “So far we have made and distributed 700 visors. Thanks to key worker staff at Excel Pharamcy, Normaton – one of the teams to recently receive our delivery – for sending their photograph, above.”

Meanwhile, our Scrub Hub team has expanded to include twelve members now. Scrubs are being delivered to Pinderfields Hospital in our local community – see them pictured above. “When our scrubs arrive at Pinderfields they are checked, stamped with NHS Mid York’s Trust and then sent for ‘heavy laundry’. Our scrubs are the base layer next to the skin and under the disposable gown, mask, gloves etc. of health care workers,” explains Mrs Maher.

“As news reports continue to highlight the difficulties healthcare workers face obtaining vital personal protective equipment, our dedicated staff remain motivated to help our community in between their guided home learning with our students, ” says Ms Boyes. ” I have also been delighted to hear news from our students of how they are also helping to make a difference in our community too. Each day I hear reports about fundraising efforts from our students and they are each highly commendable. What true school spirit !”
