From top-notch academics to leadership opportunities, our Sixth Form prepares you with the knowledge, confidence, and experience to excel in any path you choose. We hear from three of the senior prefects—Leina, Emelia and Jae —about their experiences in leadership roles, the impact they’ve had, and their advice for younger students aiming to follow in their footsteps.
Leina – Junior and Pre-Prep Senior Prefect: Leina’s leadership journey started when she saw senior prefects in their gowns in Year 7, feeling inspired to become a similar role model for younger students. Now, as a Senior Prefect, Leina runs a weekly science club for Year 4 students and is setting up a reading club for pre-prep students. She also regularly attends school events, acting as an ambassador for the school.
“My highlight has been running the science club for Year 4s,” she shares. “It’s been rewarding to plan activities and see the younger students engage and grow in their interest for science.” Leina’s role has helped her develop organisational skills and teamwork, particularly through working with staff to discuss ideas and coordinate events.
Emelia – Junior and Pre-Prep Senior Prefect: Like Leina, Emelia also works with junior school students, focusing on science club activities and attending school events. “Running the science club has been a great way to enhance my planning and leadership abilities,” Emelia explains. She has gained confidence in decision-making and communication through her involvement in school council meetings and her role in helping organise initiatives.
“It’s been incredibly rewarding to see the Year 4 students grow in confidence during science club activities,” says Emelia. This role has sharpened her ability to manage her time effectively and mentor younger students.
Jae – Super/Extracurricular Liaison Senior Prefect: Jae’s journey to becoming a senior prefect started with a personal experience of kindness and support from a prefect during her first days at WGHS. “A senior prefect helped me navigate those early days when everything felt new and overwhelming. That experience inspired me to apply for the role,” she recalls. Now, Jae is involved in various leadership projects, including helping to organise the junior school disco and supporting the school’s music programs.
“One of my highlights was compering at the 2024 Cabaret Evening, where I had the chance to support all the amazing singers of the school,” Jae shares. Through this role, Jae has learned the importance of speaking up about her beliefs and values and taking initiative in leadership tasks.
Advice for Aspiring Leaders
All three prefects agree that getting involved in school life is key to becoming a senior prefect. Leina encourages younger students to “throw themselves into everything—join clubs, committees, and help out wherever they can.” Emelia adds that “being an active member of the school community is the best way to develop leadership skills.” Jae emphasizes the importance of trying different activities and building relationships across year groups, noting that “a passion for the school community is what makes a great prefect.”
The roles of these senior prefects go beyond simple tasks—they actively shape school life for younger students, mentoring and inspiring them to grow. Their experiences highlight the value of leadership, teamwork, and community involvement in fostering a positive school environment.
