To celebrate different modern languages and cultures our Modern Foreign Languages department launched a “Colourful Cultural Cake Competition” to be held at our Open Morning Event on the 7th of October.

14 astonishingly beautiful cakes were competing against each other, each was uniquely decorated with plenty of detail representing a country or language. Students gave their cake a title and added ingredient lists in the target language to share some foreign words. The choice ranged from a Mexican Día de los muertos Cake, Global Cake, Paris Eiffel Tower Cake, Indian Holi Celebration Cake, South African Flower Cake, British Keep Calm and Carry on Cake, Dutch Apple Cake to a variety of Flag Cakes and Cupcakes. It was incredible to see such a variety of bakes. 

Over 100 votes were counted from Open Morning visitors, pupils, and members of staff who judged the cakes based on their appearance. Additionally, everyone could choose one piece of cake to try (a difficult decision!). They were all delightful and we are very proud of our students for their baking prowess.

Congratulations go to Sabiha in Year 7, who won the competition with her breathtaking double-tiered Punjabi-Peacock-Cake. The creation was beautifully decorated with bright colours, writing, ornaments and a homemade blue peacock on the top whose feathers floated down the cake. The most difficult part of the judging was trying to decide which part to try – the mango sponge with mango-buttercream or the chocolate sponge with chocolate-buttercream?

All participants of the competition have been awarded merits and will receive either a gift or a goody bag with a certificate from the MFL department during assembly. Thank you to all students who participated and made it such a wonderful experience!
