This week, the Junior Section has been celebrating British Science Week. We have all been enjoying an action packed, fun week of Science activities designed to develop science knowledge and understanding.

The students have had the opportunity to take part in a variety of exciting events, including an Animal Ark workshop where they met with a variety of animals, fostering care, respect and understanding, as well as discovering and learning more about each animal’s anatomy, how they fit into food chains and their habitats. This special visit enriched our Science Curriculum study of  “Life processes and living things”. 

Other activities throughout the week have included science-themed Escape Room Challenges relating to recent topics in science lessons. Using 10 clues, students gradually unlocked pieces of the puzzle that would ultimately allow them to escape their situation!  Our  Year 4 students enjoyed their challenge escaping a fictitious safari park !

Another highlight of Science Week was working with the senior Earthshot Student Leaders Team.  Our Earthshot Team joins a global mission to discover the best solutions to help repair our planet and Junior students were very excited to input their ideas, creating a ‘Forest of Promises’ to reduce their impact on the planet.   Each student created a leaf in which they shared their promise for the world. Through this activity, children critically and considerately reflected on their current actions, their impact on our environment and considered how they could make positive changes to help protect our environment for the future. 

Our Juniors are leading the way in reducing school carbon emissions following the results from their recent ‘Switch Off Fortnight’.  We aimed to reduce gas/electricity usage and students monitored success by comparing meter readings before the fortnight began, after the first week and at the end of the two week period, when they saw meter readings reduce. We have proudly watched our Eco-Committee Leaders share ideas in a special assembly on how we can help to reduce the amount of electricity used, collaborating with others and encouraging participation within our community.  

Science Week culminates in a highly anticipated House Science Challenge, where students will compete to see which House can build the strongest paper bridge, with a lot of coveted House points up for grabs. Thank you to our Year 12 Science Leaders, for joining our Juniors to give them guidance and suggest new ideas to help them in their engineering pursuits.
