Year 12 Geographers visit Blencathra

20th March 2023

Last week the Year 12 Geographers spent 4 days at FSC Blencathra in the wonderful Lake District National Park. The trip was an exciting opportunity for the students to gain practical experience and to develop their skills in data collection and analysis in a variety of settings. The Lake District provided the perfect environment for the students to engage in their fieldwork and develop a deeper understanding of the carbon and water cycles, and urban and rural rebranding. They gained a huge amount of knowledge about glacial landscapes and combined this with a most enjoyable walk in the snow to Easedale Tarn – the weather certainly helped them to get a feel of what it must have been like when glaciers shaped the land.

The trip was characterised by good humour, a willingness to try new things and impressive levels of confidence when carrying out questionnaire data collection in Keswick. In the evenings there were classroom sessions, where students worked through data collected throughout the day. The days were long but the combination of excellent food, comfortable accommodation, fresh air, fantastic scenery and great company meant that this was a trip that they will remember for a long time.
