Leadership….Being Head of House

31st October 2022

Every girl is encouraged to take on responsibility and leadership roles throughout school – big or small, whether that be form captain, captain of the hockey team, head of a student-led club or host of a talk.  Slowly, and without realising it, you build more and more confidence. One of the biggest highlights of the year was the introduction of our four new Houses: Mackie, Lee, Clayton and Blakey.   It’s an absolute honour to be the Head of my House in Sixth Form: I am delighted to lead Mackie House.  There are lots of challenges and it has been a pleasure to organise many exciting events and competitions that bring together younger and older girls with a common cause, helping to build the Wakefield Girls’ community. From the House Bake Off to the Danceathon, to various charity events, our Houses truly has something for everyone – mind you a baking competition is much more up my street than the dancing with my two left feet! The most rewarding aspect of this role is, without doubt, the sense of camaraderie, conviction and passion I witness every day amongst students all the way from years 3-13.

Being part of the House Team has definitely inspired a new sense of curiosity and creativity within me. It has also pushed me outside of my comfort zone to encourage others to get involved – after all it’s no easy task preparing a House chant at 8am on a Thursday morning!  This position has largely developed my leadership skills and my self-confidence. It has given me more opportunities than I ever could have imagined, and I am forever grateful for the support I have received from the House coordinators, members of staff and students.
