Year 5 Get Hands on with Cycling Safety in Bikeability

14th May 2025

Year 5 have been taking part in a Bikeability programme this week which is provided by external providers, Cycle North. This is an excellent organisation dedicated to teaching people the importance of bike safety and how to effectively look after your bike to ensure you’re always safe when riding. Year 5 have been busy learning about road safety, basic bike maintenance, road positioning and also safely signalling.

They discussed the importance of always wearing a helmet to protect their heads and also the need to wear appropriate clothing in case of a crash or fall. Students also took the time to learn more about the gears on a bike and how they can use them correctly to make riding easier on various terrains. They also learnt more about how to safely and effectively use their brakes. Although many of our students have cycled before it is a great opportunity for them to develop their confidence and to become more aware of the impacts of being unsafe whilst riding and to spend some time developing these skills in the playground with instructors before going out onto quiet roads to put their practice to the test.

Cycle North provided perfect one-on-one tuition for any student who found this more difficult and may not have been as confident and worked with them to build their confidence and develop those key skills. We hope that this experience has provided our eager Year 5 cyclists with a better understanding about how to be safer and a better rider next time they go for a bike ride. It is an excellent way to stay healthy and keep fit, and you can do it with friends and family whilst enjoying the beautiful outdoors.
