A Look Back at a Wonderful Half-Term in the Junior Section

3rd April 2025

This term, I have been impressed by the display of our students’ diverse talents and commitment. They have accomplished a range of achievements, competing in sporting events and engaging in artistic and musical endeavours.

Our athletes have excelled in many different sports, with our amazing U12 netball team becoming area champions after securing a stunning final win against Carleton, with the B team’s commendable performances securing them a fourth-place finish. It was an outstanding display of teamwork and skill. We also cannot forget our U9 netball team, who competed in matches. For some of these students, it was their first time representing Wakefield Girls’ in a sporting event. In hockey, our U10 and U11 teams competed against Bradford Grammar School, coming away with some impressive wins. A massive well done to all the sports teams, an outstanding effort!

Beyond the sports field, our students have demonstrated exceptional musical talent. The Young Musicians of the Year competition, featuring 222 student performances, saw Rebecca and Lauren named Young Musicians of the Year. This event truly showcased the students’ remarkable musical abilities. The House Dance finals also displayed incredible energy and creativity, with winning groups from each year delivering outstanding performances in areas such as line dancing, cheerleading, Bollywood, and lyrical dancing.

We also hosted our highly competitive Spelling Bee, which consisted of multiple rounds. The first round was a written spelling test completed by all students. From there, the top twenty performing students went on to the second, spoken round. After some tense competition, the two highest achievers from each house made it to an exciting final where a winner from each year group was decided.

World Book Day is always an exciting event for both students and staff, with many different costumes paraded throughout the day. It is a great way to engage students in reading and develop a love for books. Additionally, students had the opportunity to compete in the IAPS art competition, where they were tasked with creating art based on the thoughtful inspiration of the “reflect or reflections” theme. Each student was encouraged to explore this theme in different ways, and the results were very impressive. A selection of judges from the Senior Section were thoroughly impressed by the artwork and selected winners from each year group. Two of our students, Rose and Anaya, were then selected to represent our school in the IAPS Art competition. Well done to them both!

Educational trips enriched our students’ learning experiences, with Year 3 taking a trip to York to learn about Vikings. They had a chance of being archaeologists and digging up ancient artifacts, while also listening to captivating stories, ensuring they brought their knowledge and understanding back to the classroom. In addition, our school joined Hands Across Wakefield to celebrate the Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust’s 125th anniversary and the invaluable service they provide to our community.

We have also taken part in lots of exciting workshops, ranging from the Creature Ark visit, where students had the chance to handle animals like snakes and lizards, to using virtual reality to enhance their learning of the solar system and ocean. This term has been full of learning opportunities and amazing accomplishments, which are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students. We couldn’t be prouder.
