Innovation In Action: Year 9 & 10 Take Part In Rotary Technology Tournament

12th March 2025

Yesterday was an exciting day for twelve Year 9 and 10 students from Wakefield Girls as they joined their peers from QEGS on a trip to Featherstone Rovers Stadium to participate in the Annual Rotary Technology Tournament. The tournament is a challenging and enjoyable way for young people to enrich their STEM learning (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) outside of the classroom.

There were four teams in total, with Wakefield Girls’ students working alongside their QEGS peers to solve an interactive technology-based task. This task required each team to design, develop, and build a solution using only the basic materials and tools supplied. This year’s challenge required teams to design and build a motorized vehicle that could move and maneuver around objects through a tunnel.

The tournament culminated in the testing session, where teams demonstrated their solutions and observed the efforts of their competitors. It was a very exciting and tense moment as all the students gathered to watch their vehicles perform.

Although we didn’t win the competition, we were runners-up in both the Foundation and Intermediate categories and joint runners-up in the Advanced category.

The Wakefield Girls’ students had an excellent time participating in the tournament and really enjoyed the opportunity to work alongside their QEGS peers. They were able to put their design and engineering skills and knowledge to the test in a fun and interactive way, learning valuable lessons about teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.
