International Women’s Day 2025 : Empowered by sporting success at Wakefield Girls’

As we approach international Women’s day we are delighted to showcase the remarkable skill, passion, and determination of our young athletes. From netball courts to cricket pitches, swimming pools to cross-country trails, our students have consistently demonstrated excellence and sportsmanship, setting a powerful example for aspiring future athletes.

Our U19 and U16 Netball squads have achieved national recognition, securing coveted spots at the EIS National Cup in March. The U16s, led by co-captains Ella M and Annabel M, were crowned Yorkshire and Humberside Champions after an undefeated run. The U19s, under the guidance of Lillie W and Maddy D, fought valiantly to secure the runners-up position, earning their place alongside the U16s at the England Netball National Schools Finals. This remarkable feat positions Wakefield Girls’ as the only school in the region with two teams advancing to this prestigious stage.

Further netball success was seen at the Wakefield District Tournament. Our U15 squads displayed incredible skill and passion, with the A Team triumphing as District Champions. The U14 teams also delivered outstanding performances, with the A Team claiming victory. A massive well done to all the teams, an outstanding effort by each player! These achievements underscore the depth of talent and dedication within our netball teams across school.

Our U15 Indoor Cricket team has made history, defeating GSAL to become West Yorkshire Champions. Led by Captain Navya, the team showcased exceptional cricket skills and will now represent West Yorkshire at the regional finals in Headingley. Additionally, the U15 Cricket team dominated the West Yorkshire Qualifiers of the U15 Lady Taverners Indoor Cricket competition, further solidifying their cricketing prowess.

Our U10 and U11 swimmers demonstrated remarkable skill and determination at the IAPS swimming trials, with many advancing to the national stage. Our U15 team also achieved a significant milestone, triumphing over Yarm in the Sisters in Sport Northern Semi-Final and securing a place in the National Finals.

Our KS3 and KS4 badminton teams showcased outstanding performances at the Badminton England National Schools competition, with the KS4 team advancing to the North East round. Our cross-country athletes displayed incredible endurance and spirit at the West Yorkshire Championships, pushing their limits and demonstrating exceptional sportsmanship.

Our volleyball and hockey teams have also achieved significant success. Our U15 volleyball team triumphed in a challenging pool of experienced teams, showcasing their skill and determination. Our U16 Hockey Squad were victors at the England Hockey T3 Yorkshire Finals and will now proceed to regional finals. Our U15 Netball Squad defeated Withington Girls’ School to advance to the Cup quarter-finals. Our U18 mixed volleyball team and development football teams showed great sportsmanship and skill during their matches. We also had the pleasure of hosting Belgrano School from Argentina, fostering international friendships and cultural exchange.

These achievements demonstrate the unwavering commitment of our students to excellence in sports, and the dedication,passion and enthusiasm of our coaches in nurturing their talents. Wakefield Girls’ is committed to empowering young girls to pursue their sporting passions, building confidence, resilience, and teamwork skills that will serve them well throughout their lives. We are immensely proud of all our athletes and look forward to celebrating their continued success throughout the academic year.

  • U16 Netball National School finalists (Nationals to be played on 16th March)
  • U19 Netball National School finalists (Nationals to be played on 15th March)
  • U13 Sisters n’ Sport Quarter finalists in the Shield Competition 
  • U19 Sisters n’ Sport Semi finalists in the Cup Competition 
  • U15 Sisters n’ Sport Squad have reached the final 4 of the Cup competition (Finals to be played in March)
  • Key Stage 4 Badminton Squad won the Yorkshire National Schools Badminton competition and  will be playing in the Yorkshire and North East Finals of the National Schools Badminton Competition tomorrow
  • U13 Indoor Cricket West Yorkshire Finalists
  • U15 Indoor Cricket WY Champions & due to play in the Yorkshire finals to be played later this month
  •  U18 competed in the T3 Hockey Regional finals and finished 3rd in the North East 
  • U16 Hockey National Schools Squad competed in the T3 North East finals and finished as regional runners up. They were also crowned T3 Yorkshire Champions 
  • Indoor HockeyU14, U16 & U18 North East finalists
  • Our indoor hockey team consisting of Ellie Tingle, Molly Robinson, Henny Gibson & Lucia Partridge competed for and represented Wakefield Hockey Club at the Clubs Indoor Hockey National Finals and finished joint 3rd in the country.
