On Tuesday we had the pleasure of hosting Belgrano Day School from Argentina for a day of friendly competition in volleyball and hockey. The event was a resounding success, with both schools showcasing their athletic talents.
The day’s schedule was packed with exciting matches, the U18s began their match with some obvious nerves and conceded an early goal to go 0-1 down. However they grew into the match and defended solidly for long periods. Some excellent runs up the wings by Molly and Gabby began to create more opportunities and Eve had a shot well saved by the Belgrano keeper. Despite their hard work, the game eventually finished 0-2 which was still a good result against some outstanding Argentinian players!
The U16s started brilliantly with an early goal from Rosie, before being pegged back to 1-1 by the visiting team. However they grew in confidence and began to use some excellent passing sequences to work the ball up the pitch and were rewarded with a well struck goal by Lottie and a far post finish from Claudia. They started the second half well with a skillful run up the right by Charlotte which was finished off from a tight angle by Amber. A fantastic individual goal from Libby and a second for Rosie finished the game at 6-2 to WGHS.
While both schools celebrated wins, the focus extended beyond the scoreboard. Students from both sides were eager to learn about each other’s cultures, fostering a spirit of understanding and friendship. A highlight of the day was the time spent together after the matches. During refreshments, students laughed, shared stories, shared mobile numbers and new friendships formed.
The visit concluded with presentations from both schools, with small gifts exchanged as tokens of appreciation. The event served as a valuable opportunity for meeting new people and learning about different cultures and athletic competition, leaving a lasting positive impression on all involved. Thank you Belgrano School.
