Becoming Leaders: Insights and Inspiration from Our Sixth Form Head Girls

25th October 2024

Unlock your potential in Wakefield Girls’ Sixth Form, where top academics and leadership development go hand in hand, preparing you with the skills needed for future success. Meet Ellie and Alice as they share their journeys in becoming Head Girl and Deputy Head Girl, their responsibilities, and the ways these roles have strengthened their confidence and leadership abilities.

Ellie, Head Girl: Ellie’s journey to becoming Head Girl began in junior school, where she first held the position. “I always looked up to the Head Girls that came before me,” she recalls. By Year 12, Ellie questioned whether she had the time or ability for such a role but decided to go for it anyway. “What was the worst that could happen?” she thought—and now, she leads as Head Girl at Wakefield Girls’.

In her role, Ellie is focused on collecting student voices to drive change and improvements at the school. One of her standout moments so far was delivering a speech to a group of alumnae. “It was a reflection on school life and my personal stories from my journey at Wakefield Girls’,” she explains. “The feedback was filled with emotion, and the alumnae were able to reminisce about their own school memories. It was such a special moment, and I felt proud to be part of it.”

Alice, Deputy Head Girl Alice’s ambition to join the Senior Prefect Team also grew throughout her school years. “The Senior Prefects were always people I looked up to,” she says. “I aspired to be one of them so I could be a role model for younger students and make a positive impact on the school community.” When the opportunity came to apply for the team, Alice didn’t hesitate. “I went for it, and I’m now the Deputy Head Girl.”

In her role, Alice works closely with Ellie and the rest of the team, supporting school events and representing the school at key functions. “I attend events like Speech Day, Founder’s Day, and parents’ evenings as a school ambassador,” she explains. A highlight of her role so far has been speaking to the school governors about the ideas her team developed. “It was exciting to share our vision with the governors, and I also loved helping out with the Year 5 empowHER event. Seeing the pupils grow in confidence throughout the day was truly memorable.”

Developing Leadership Skills

Both Ellie and Alice agree that their roles have helped them grow as leaders. “Being Head Girl has taught me a lot about communication and how to lead a team,” Ellie says. “I’ve learned that by supporting and encouraging others, we can achieve better outcomes for the school.”

Alice, too, has seen her leadership skills flourish. “Being Deputy Head Girl has definitely helped me build confidence in presenting to large groups,” she shares. “Whether it’s speaking in assemblies or meetings, I’ve grown more comfortable in my role. I’ve also learned the importance of organisation in leadership.”

At Wakefield Girls’ Sixth Form, students find a place where academic excellence meets personal development, creating a foundation for future success. For Ellie and Alice, leadership is a journey that builds gradually over time. As Alice notes, “Students start growing into leadership roles as they take on responsibilities as student leaders, with skills deepening as they step into Sixth Form prefect roles.”

Ellie and Alice’s experiences reflect our Sixth Form which empowers students to grow, lead, and contribute meaningfully developing their own skills, our school community and leaving a lasting impact for years to come.
