Senior’s Spelling Bee 2024

18th April 2024

Spelling bees have long been a cherished tradition in educational settings, showcasing the linguistic prowess and competitive spirit of students whilst also stretching students’ vocabulary. The second annual Wakefield Girls’ House Spelling Bee was another impressive display of linguistic dexterity and competitive zeal by our students.

The competition began initially with form group rounds in their English lessons, which led to the top spellers from each form in each house being invited to compete in a year group round. In this second round the challenge intensified, as students were tested on words in French, Spanish and German, as well as challenging key words from all of their other school subjects.

The final took place on Wednesday 17th April, and saw students from Years 7 to 9 competing against each other and being tested on the toughest spellings of all! The final had extremely difficult words – such as onomatopoeia, soliloquy, anthropometric and omniscient – but our students were not deterred and remained calm under pressure. The competitive spirit, friendly support and good humour throughout the competition has been a joy to witness! Well done to all students who participated.
