House Decades Day

22nd March 2024

On Friday 22nd March Wakefield Girls’ was transported back in time, as the whole school rejoiced in ‘Decades Day’. Organised by Year 13 student and Head of Blakey House, Liv, her vision was for each House to come together to celebrate a ‘decade’ by dressing up in the fashion of that decade; and of course to celebrate the last day of Spring term in style!

Students in Mackie House transformed into the technicolour of the 1960’s, Clayton radiated flower power as they wore clothes from the 1970’s, Lee looked rad as they dressed up in the 1980’s, and finally Blakey donned their best 1990’s grunge outfits.

Here is what the event organiser – Year 13 student Liv – had to say:

When I became Head of House, one of my main goals was to bridge the gap between the year groups. I thought a good way to do this would be through fashion. Fashion and pop culture trends over the years have always interested me, so I thought I’d incorporate this into my role.

I envisioned ‘Decades Day’ as a fun event that would not only allow people to creatively express themselves but that would also invite discussion between year groups as they admired each other’s outfits.

Seeing the way people have praised and laughed about each other’s outfits today, I believe it has definitely fulfilled this goal, and I look forward to seeing how this event evolves after I leave Wakefield Girls’. Although I may not have lived through any of these decades, as I walked into the Jubilee Hall on Friday morning for assembly, I was transported through 40 incredibly fashionable years of history.
