UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge

31st January 2024

This week all students from Years 9-11 have been participating in the UK Maths Trust Intermediate Maths Challenge during their maths lessons.

This prestigious competition is an enjoyable way for students to test themselves and their mathematical ability. It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency to make students think.

The challenge itself is 60 minutes in duration with 25 multiple choice questions. The problems on the Intermediate Maths Challenge are designed to make students think, most are accessible yet still challenge those with more experience.

Maths competitions can help pupil’s gain confidence in tackling unfamiliar mathematical challenges. They are also particularly valuable for our highest achieving students as the questions get progressively harder throughout the paper providing challenge and thought-provoking, suitable stretch for these students. Moreover, the challenge is a nationally recognised competition which can be included on CVs and in job applications to effectively demonstrate a student’s mathematical reasoning skills.

All students receive a certificate for participation, and many of our students excel and receive either Bronze, Silver or Gold certificates. Well done and good luck to all our students participating in the challenge this week – we can’t wait to find out their results!
