On Tuesday 20th June, we were thrilled to welcome our new cohort of Year 7 students joining us in September. The current Year 6 students joined us in the morning to participate in lots of fun team-building and ice-breaker games in their form groups, helped along by the Sixth Form Senior Prefects.
Our new students visited their Year 7 classrooms, all located on Newstead corridor, to meet their new form tutors. Students had time to read through and discuss our New Student Handbook, a helpful guide to life at Wakefield Girls’, with their form tutors.
Student’s joining us from other primary schools were welcomed into one of our four Houses: Mackie, Lee, Clayton or Blakey. Our own Junior students were extremely excited to welcome new students to their Houses, and shared details of their favourite House events that have been held this year. The House system is a great opportunity for everyone to mix and participate in fun group events, all with the intention of winning House points and ultimately winning the House Trophy!
At midday, students returned to Jubilee Hall to meet their buddy. This is a current Year 7 student, who will be in Year 8 in September, who will be a familiar friendly face around school. Buddies check in on the Year 7’s throughout their first year at Wakefield Girls’, making sure they are comfortable and happy within Senior school. The buddies took our new students for lunch in Peppers dining hall, and spent lunchtime socialising and giving them tips for life at Wakefield Girls’.
In the afternoon, the new students completed a scavenger hunt around school, using a map of the school and hints by Mrs Lindley, Head of Year 7. They had to find posters hidden around school, with the aim of helping to familiarise themselves with our school campus.
We hope all of our new students had a lovely day meeting their new classmates and discovering their new school – we really look forward to seeing you again in September.
Mrs K Lindley
Head of Year 7
