We’re Off To The Regional Finals – English Schools Athletics

15th May 2023

On Wednesday 10th May, our athletics squads competed in the West Yorkshire round of the English Schools Athletics competition. For our Junior (Years 7 and 8) team, this was the first major athletics competition that many of them had taken part in. However thanks to some good training sessions during EDGE they were all well prepared to compete! Hettie led the way with a superb 22.94m in the javelin, followed by a rapid 5:55 in the 1500m. Another notable performance came from Dulcie, who despite being a year younger than many of her competitors, jumped an impressive 1.29m in the high jump. The squad finished with an excellent 260 points to finish in 3rd place and progress to the Regional B Final.

Our more experienced Inter Squad (Years 9 and 10) were excited to begin this year’s campaign, having come so close to reaching National Finals last year. There were a number of outstanding performances, particularly on the track, where virtually all our students won their heat, got a personal best time or both! Captain Emily ran an outstanding 12.7s in the 100m and Libby continued her fantastic form from last year to run 2:22 in the 800m, scoring a massive 29 and 30 points respectively. There was a great team spirit this year with both Nancy and Lucia running superb times in the 1500m, despite it being an event they don’t usually compete in, and Charlotte putting last year’s fall behind her to win her hurdles heat! These fantastic results culminated in a final score of 420 points, winning the competition by a whopping 134 points from their nearest rival ! To put this into context, this score would have seen our team finish 8th in the country last year.  Our team is now ready to head off to the Regional A Finals, with a chance to qualify for the National Finals. We wish them all the best of luck for the next round!
