Junior Spring Concert

30th March 2023

On Wednesday evening our Junior section lifted the roof of Jubilee Hall as they performed their  annual Spring Concert for family and friends.

Our Junior School Orchestra, directed by Music Teacher Mrs White, opened the show performing two pieces: Autumn by Vivaldi, and El Condor Pasa provided by Andersson & Ulvaenus.

We welcomed our Lower Junior Inter-House Winner, Fei Fei on stage to perform Disco Baroque by A. Bullard on Piano. Fei Fei was awarded Young Musician of the Year at our recent Inter-House Music Competition, so we were very excited to hear her once again perform, this time in front of proud family as well as friends.

Our Under 9 Choir, directed by Mrs White and accompanied by Mrs Browning, performed three songs: Wondering by Trad Bohemian, Get that Fly Trad. Arr by Althouse & Albrecht, and lastly Higher and Higher by Crossley & Kirkham.

We also enjoyed a performance of Sweet Caroline, Scarborough Fair and The Incredible Shrinking Clarinet by Sherbet Dips and Friends, directed by Mrs Turner.

A highlight of the evening was our youngest students from our Pre-Preparatory School performing.  The Year 2 Choir have been preparing for this concert for several weeks with their Music Director Mrs Browning, and it was a real delight for us all.  The choir performed Brighter Day Tomorrow by M & H Johnson and Purple People Eater by Wooley. Alongside their brilliant singing, they also had dance moves which overall gave a vivacious energy to their performance.

It was always going to be a tough act to follow the Year 2 choir, but Top Brass rose to the occasion and put on a great show. Directed by Mr Dodd, the group performed four pieces: Regal Fanfare by M. Dodd, First Sounds by S. Johnson, Alpine Horns by C. North and finally Mexicano by M. Walker.

Following on from our Brass section, we had our much-loved Flaxonets performing. Excitingly, the group was directed by Year 12 student Isobel Skinner, who has worked with the students over the past year. They performed Espana by Chabrier and Norwegian Dance by Grieg.

Next we had the Suzuki Violin Group, directed by Ms Goddard. They performed four pieces: Twinkle Variations Traditional, Allegro Suzuki, Witches Dance Paganini and Swedish Shoemaker Trad. Arr by H Butterworth.

We were delighted to welcome our U11 Young Musician of the Year, Azariah Heppinstall. In the Junior Inter-House Music Competition she wowed the judge with her performance on Saxophone, and she was just as impressive in Jubilee Hall! She performed Saxsequential by P. Harris.

Up next was our Flute Group, directed by Mrs Heath who performed two pieces. Firstly, Diva Waltz by J. Rae and secondly, Texas Boogie by J. Rae.

Our Under 11 Choir also made their way to the stage and it was clear the students were extremely excited to show the audience what they had been working on the past few months. Directed by Head of Music Mrs White and accompanied by Mrs Browning, the choir sang two songs: Chariot’s Comin’! by Besig & Price and then Remember by Quartel.

Finally, our Massed Choirs brought the evening to a close, singing us out with a rendition of Mass Medley Traditional. It was such a lovely evening with some incredible performances by students.
