Alumna Delivers Medicine Lecture

13th March 2023

Alumna Dr Lindsey Sinclair (OG, 1996) returned to Wakefield Girls’ today to deliver a careers talk on going into medicine as a profession, and her route to Psychiatry as a specialism. Students from Year 10-13 from both Wakefield Girls’ and QEGS attended.

Dr Lindsey divides her time between working as a Psychiatrist seeing patients, whilst also working as a Clinical Research Fellow at Bristol Medical School. Her research is studying the relationship between Dementia and depression, funded by the Alzheimer’s Society.

In her talk, Dr Lindsey spoke about her academic and career progression, from studying in medical school to the challenge of being a junior doctor. This then prompted her to return to university to gain a Master’s degree in Neuroscience, followed by a PhD in Psychiatry.

Dr Lindsey shared highlights of her profession which included variety and working with interesting people, speaking to patients and visiting them in their homes, trying to ascertain the veracity of what they are telling her.  A challenging role, Dr Lindsey also shared the struggles of maintaining a work-life balance as a doctor, the extreme pressure that the NHS is currently under and how this impacts patient care but also doctor’s wellbeing.

At the end of the talk students were fortunate to pose their questions to Dr Lindsey in an open Question and Answer session. Thank you to Dr Lindsey for taking time out of her busy schedule to return to school to deliver this talk!
