Inspiring a United Future for Wakefield Grammar School Foundation

3rd December 2024

On Monday morning, Wakefield Girls’ welcomed Dr. Richard Brookes, the Head of QEGS, who will soon step into the role of Executive Head of the Wakefield Grammar School Foundation. Dr. Brookes addressed students with warmth and enthusiasm, sharing his vision for the schools’ united future while reflecting on his own journey and the transformative potential of education.

Dr. Brookes began by congratulating Ms. Boyes on her new role at Royal High School, Bath, and acknowledged her significant contributions to Wakefield Girls’. He also celebrated the appointment of Mrs. Tingle as Associate Head, expressing confidence in her leadership as the schools prepare for their exciting new chapter.

With a blend of humility and humour, Dr. Brookes shared his own story – from his formative years at King Edward’s School in Birmingham, supported by a bursary, to his academic path through Oxford and a career in teaching and leadership. His experiences, he explained, have shaped his deep belief in the power of education to transform lives, a principle he carries into his work at the Foundation.

Dr. Brookes emphasised his commitment to keeping students at the heart of decision-making. From curriculum choices to pastoral care and facilities, he assured students that their voices would be heard as plans unfold. His focus is clear: to create a school where collaboration, respect, and shared experiences foster both personal growth and academic success.

Looking ahead, Dr. Brookes highlighted the importance of preserving cherished traditions while building new ones. He spoke of increasing opportunities for students to collaborate across our schools, preparing for the unification of Wakefield Girls’ and QEGS in 2026. His vision centers on a school community where everyone feels valued and empowered, regardless of their background, talents, or perspectives.

As he concluded, Dr. Brookes reflected on the legacy of both schools, emphasising that their strength lies not in their buildings or history, but in their people. With students as the driving force, he expressed confidence in a bright, united future.

Wakefield Girls’ looks forward to welcoming Dr. Brookes into his new role and working together to shape a future of shared success and opportunity.
