RNLI Music Concert at Wakefield Cathedral

22nd May 2024
Our musicians in the String Quartet and Brass Quintet played beautifully in a concert on Friday 17th May to celebrate 200 years of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), in Wakefield Cathedral.

The concert was generally sea-themed and also featured a range of performances from Wakefield Cathedral Choir, James Bowstead and Alana Brook on the organ and the stunning vocal group “Ensemble Pro Victoria”.  There were also a series of readings from guest speakers about sea rescue and the story of Grade Darling.

Our string quartet played two movements from Gustav Holst’s St. Paul’s Suite and a rousing arrangement of I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside.  The brass quintet from QEGS started the concert with a fanfare on Old Hundredth and played a lyrical piece by Kamen, which sung out in the fabulous acoustic of the Cathedral.

We were delighted to receive a letter of appreciation from Clive Rand, RNLI Vice President on behalf of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution thanking our music team for an outstanding contribution to the ‘RNLI 200 Years and Counting’ concert.
RNLI Vice President said: “When we devised the concert last year the aim was not only the commemoration of 200 years of heroic life- saving at sea but also a celebration of the present and inspiration for the future of our unique charity. Thanks to you, your students, your colleagues and everyone who took part, these objectives were not only met but exceeded with two hours of enchanting music performed by highly-talented singers and players and poignant readings describing the passion and courage of our people. The result was an uplifting, stimulating and unforgettable evening we can all be very proud of.”
