World Music Day – Samba Workshops

22nd June 2023

On Wednesday 21st June, we celebrated World Music Day – a day designated to pay tribute to music, and appreciate the significant role it plays in everybody’s life. The theme for World Music Day 2023 was ‘Music on the Intersections’, highlighting the rich variety of music throughout the globe, in unifying communities and individuals.

This year we welcomed back Mr Sambabamba Man (otherwise known as Brian Costello) to run a series of workshops for Junior Girls and staff, exploring Samba instruments and how Samba music works through performance. The students discovered a range of new instruments, such as a tamborim, ganza, Surdos, Reco-Reco and Apitos!

Mr Costello has been a professional drummer/percussionist for over twenty years. He explained to students about the musical culture in Brazil, specifically a ‘Samba parade’, where samba schools would come together, perform and compete for the position of ‘Grand Champion’.

The workshops were a great opportunity for the students to let loose and have fun creating music alongside their peers. We hope all of the students enjoyed their Samba workshops and potentially discovered a new favourite instrument or genre of music!
