Coronation Celebrations

5th May 2023

On Friday 5th May, we joined in with the rest of the nation beginning celebrations for the Coronation of King Charles II on Saturday 6th May.

A major historical event for all involved, at Wakefield Girls’ we wanted to make it a celebration that all of our students remember and recount for years to come.

During the morning our Junior students enjoyed many fun Coronation themed activities in conjunction with our brother school QEGS, including a Monarchy related Scavenger Hunt, designing their own Royal stamps and crafting their own crowns.   The doors of St John’s House were open for QEGS Junior boys to join our classes and girls received a warm welcome into QEGS Junior section too.   The occasion presented a wonderful opportunity to celebrate together.

Students of every age and staff came together for a relaxed, celebratory BBQ lunch and to listen to Head Ms Boyes speech about the historical event.  Ms Boyes’ unveiled a commemorative Coronation Plaque along with new planting of delphiniums, one of King Charles favourite flowers, in the newly named King’s Garden.  Our musicians, as always, chimed in on time with a rousing rendition of the National Anthem that stirred us all.  The singing was loud !

A real highlight was perhaps the puddings….. designed by our own Junior students and produced by our wonderful catering team, Holroyd Howe.  Congratulations go to Year 6 student Sabiha and Year 5 student Keona for designing the winning creations of the ‘Pudding Fit For a King’ competition  – we all enjoyed today’s puddings ‘Fit For A King’ very much!  The arrival of the ice-cream van topped the treats off before the fun ended with students returning to lessons for the afternoon, energised and with a spring in their step after the delicious treats !
