Earth Day 2023

24th April 2023

The focus for Earth Day 2023 is ‘Invest in our planet’. The newly formed Wakefield Girls’ Generation Earthshot Team has been working hard all year, collaborating with other student-led groups and departments to put together assemblies and activities for all students to take part in for Earth Day 2023. The aim being to enable students across our school community to learn more about human impact on the planet, and what we can do as individuals and as a school community to live more sustainably.

Our Generation Earthshot Team worked with student leaders in our Food Committee and our catering team, Holroyd Howe, to create an Earth Day menu which featured foods which are currently in season in the UK, in an effort to reduce our carbon footprint. Student leaders in our Religion, Philosophy and Ethics group joined forces with Generation Earthshot Team and worked together to sell raffle tickets for two Eco-Hampers, packed with environmentally friendly items to raise money for the Woodland Trust. Our Student Librarians also supported by putting together a fantastic display, showcasing resources all students can use to learn more about the planet and how to protect it.

Other activities running in our Junior and Senior sections included Form time activities, in which students could learn more about climate change and how to reduce their carbon footprint.  Junior students were very excited to welcome The Generation Earthshot Team to St John’s House where they ran a ‘Forest of Promises’ activity which included students making promises to reduce their impact on the planet. Our Eco-school Committee followed this up with an interactive quiz in which students could consider how our school can work better for nature and the planet.

How will you change your habits to benefit the planet?

The planning now begins for Earth Day 2024!
