Our Junior Sections Rise to the Challenge in the Junior Bake Off

2nd March 2026

The atmosphere was electric, and the ovens were hot, in our Food Technology room this week as we hosted the highly anticipated Junior Bake Off. Our talented young contestants took to their stations to showcase some truly exceptional culinary skills, proving that the future of baking at Wakefield Grammar School Foundation is in very safe hands.

The brief was deceptively simple but required precision and flair: to create the perfect batch of scones. Pupils were given the creative freedom to choose between a classic sweet recipe or a bold savoury twist. From the careful rubbing-in of butter to achieving that elusive ‘perfect rise,’ the level of focus in the room was amazing.

We were delighted to welcome expert judges from our catering partners, Holroyd Howe, who had the unenviable task of tasting every entry. They looked for consistent sizing, a light texture, and, of course, impeccable flavour.

With so many impressive entries displaying advanced techniques, the judges admitted that reaching a final verdict was incredibly difficult. However, after much deliberation, a winner was decided.

Congratulations to Leena! 🥇🧀

A massive congratulations goes to Leena, whose delicious savoury scones won over the judges’ palates. Her entry was praised for its wonderful balance of flavours and professional finish, a truly well-deserved win!

We would like to extend a huge thank you to the team at Holroyd Howe for their expertise and support, and a well done to every pupil who took part. It was a fantastic morning of creativity, competition, and, most importantly, great tasting food! 👏✨
