Founders’ Day Celebrations 2025

22nd September 2025

This year marked the 147th anniversary of our school. We celebrated with the same strong sense of community, friendship, and empowerment that has always defined us. Pupils and staff from across the school headed down to Wakefield Cathedral, where a service was held. Talented musicians played, speeches were made, and we all gathered afterward on the cobbles for a BBQ-style lunch and music, reflecting on our rich history, which began all the way back in 1878.

The day highlighted and honoured pupils and staff, recognising the lasting impact they have made on our school community. We had some wonderful performances from our Senior Concert Band, Founders’ Day Band, and many soloists. We were welcomed into the cathedral by Canon Kathryn Goldsmith. This wonderful celebration also included readings and speeches from our Head Girl, Arianna, who highlighted that this is not only a celebration of everything Wakefield Girls’ has achieved so far but also what it will take into the future. Gabby, one of our Deputy Head Girls, and Sienna and Amaya also spoke, reflecting on their time at Wakefield Girls’. We also welcomed the Mayor of Wakefield and other council officials to our celebrations, alongside the Chair of Governors and guest speaker and former Head Girl, Clara, who read a poem titled ‘Lo Nuestro’. And let’s not forget our school song, which was accompanied by the Senior Concert Band.

Following this wonderful ceremony, we all returned to Wakefield Girls’ High School and gathered on the Cobbles and the Quad to continue the celebrations with a BBQ-style lunch. It was a truly special day that commemorated and celebrated everyone in our Wakefield Girls’ community.
