This Tuesday and Wednesday saw our school filled with scientific discovery as we hosted Year 5 students from across the Wakefield area for our exciting SPLATS (Students Presenting, Learning and Teaching Science) days.
Under the expert guidance of specially trained Year 10 students, the visiting primary pupils were immersed in a whirlwind of six captivating science experiments. From the thrilling excitement of exploding pop tubs to the ingenuity of solar circuits and the competitive fun of racing hand-made rollers, it was a day packed with hands-on learning and memorable activities for the Year 5 participants.
The SPLATS initiative proved to be a resounding success not only for our younger visitors but also for our dedicated Year 10 student teachers. This unique program was designed to foster key presentation and leadership skills among our older students, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
Year 10 students shared how the experience significantly “improved my confidence and solidified my knowledge,” with one adding that it “helped me understand how to explain well.” Another student concluded, “it proves that you can do anything with the right motivation.”
We are incredibly proud of both our Year 5 guests for their enthusiastic participation and our Year 10 students for their exceptional teaching and mentorship. SPLATS truly embodied our school’s commitment to fostering a love for science and developing well-rounded, confident learners.
