Girl Guide Harriet visits Houses of Parliament with MP Kim Leadbeater!

12th June 2024

On Tuesday 7th May, Year 7 student Harriet had an exciting trip to London with her Girl Guides group. She had been invited by the Girlguiding organisation alongside fellow girl guides in her division and across the country, to visit the nation’s capital and listen to inspiring speeches reminding the young women of their power as individuals and as a collective.

Later on in the day, Harriet and her fellow guides had the wonderful experience of having an exclusive guided tour of the Houses of Parliament by MP Kim Leadbeater. In one of the meeting rooms they were given a challenge to decide where to allocate extra funding within British politics: analysing the different departments and what they do, and where the money could be best used. It was an interesting opportunity for the young women to think about politics and how the country is run.

Harriet recollects on the experience: “My favourite part of the day was seeing the people who worked in Parliament and how they had planned the day. It was impressive how many things we managed to do, in just one day!”.

The guiding principle of the Girl Guides is to provide fun, friendship, challenge and adventure to participating members; empowering girls to find their voice, inspiring them to discover the best in themselves and to make a positive difference in their community. These values and their mission are in accordance with the values we impart upon our students at Wakefield Girls’, hence we are so pleased for Harriet for being so involved in Girl Guides outside of school.

We are very happy for Harriet and so glad to hear about the memorable experience she had!
