Rotary Technology Tournament

14th March 2024

Yesterday, 12th March, was an exciting day for twelve Year 9, 10 and 12 students from Wakefield Girls’ as they joined their peers from QEGS in the trip to Featherstone Rovers Stadium to participate in the Annual Rotary Technology Tournament. The tournament is a challenging and enjoyable way for young people to enrich their STEM learning (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) outside of the classroom.

There were 4 teams in total, with Wakefield Girls’ students working alongside their QEGS peers to solve an interactive technology-based task requiring each team to work together to design, develop and build a solution using only the basic materials and tools supplied. The challenge this year required teams to design and build a launcher to fire a space capsule containing meteorological instruments into the stratosphere!

The tournament culminated in the testing session, where teams demonstrated their best solution to the task and observed the efforts of competing teams. It was a very exciting and tense moment as all the students gathered around, counted down and propelled their capsules into space.

Although we didn’t win the competition we did gain 2nd place in the intermediary category and third and second place in the advanced.

The Wakefield Girls’ students had an excellent time participating in the tournament and really enjoyed the opportunity to work alongside their QEGS peers. They were able to put their design and engineering skills and knowledge to the test in a fun and interactive way, learning valuable lessons about teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.
