International Mother Language Day

21st February 2023

Today in the Junior Section we are celebrating International Mother Language Day, to acknowledge and praise the diverse languages spoken within our school community.

In preparation for the day, our Junior Language Ambassadors with the help of Mrs White put together a video which showed students from Year 3 to 6 introducing themselves in their Mother Tongue. The video illustrates the wide range of languages spoken within our school, from Mandarin to Swedish!

This video is then being used in student’s language lessons this week. Students will watch the video and try to identify as many of the languages as possible (using the flags in the background as clues!) Year 3 students today were very confident identifying Spanish and Italian, but they were slightly more perplexed trying to guess the flags of Portugal and Lithuania. There were some impressive guesses though, ranging from Columbia, Chile, Turkey and Poland!

Another exciting aspect of language lessons this week is that students with a different Mother Tongue were then invited to the front of the class to teach their peers a few phrases in their language. In Mrs White’s class today, the languages being taught were Mandarin, Italian and Telugu. Students loved being taught by their peers and quickly picked up the phrases, so we hope that they continue to use these new phrases and teach their parents when they get home!
