On Tuesday 17th May, the Junior and Inter squads competed in the first round of the English Schools Athletics competition at Thornes Park. Despite not having competed in athletics for the past two years due to COVID, the teams had worked hard over the first few weeks of the Summer Term to prepare themselves for the event.
There were some fabulous individual performances, with many students achieving new personal best scores in their respective events. Special mentions must go to Libby Cree for scoring 33 points in the 800m and Emily Dimbylow for scoring 27 points in the 100m.
As a team competition, the score that really mattered was the overall points total. The Inter team came away with a massive 346 points and the Junior team with 322 points. This meant that both Wakefield Girls’ teams finished top in their respective categories in West Yorkshire and will now progress to the Regional Finals in Derby on 16th June. Well done to all the students involved and best of luck in the next round.
A number of athletes have also been invited to attend the Wakefield District Trials over the last few weeks. After some more superb individual performances, the following athletes have been selected to represent Wakefield in the West Yorkshire Championships in Cleckheaton on 11th June.
