The Matilda Awards allow us to celebrate how our students grow from their reading. An annual challenge open to students from Year 5 to Year 13, suggests four new reading lists (Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum) containing a wide variety of books of differing levels of challenge to students. For 2022, the aim of the Matilda Awards was to encourage Wakefield Girls to read books that would introduce them to people who dare to be bold or be different from those around them. Some characters have feisty personalities, whilst others have obstacles to overcome or incredible journeys to complete. The characters in these books all have something powerful and inspirational about them that we can enjoy reading about.
To gain a Matilda Award, students read and reflected on at least three books from their reading lists over a three month period. They then completed reflective tasks based on what they had read.
Fifteen students took part this year, ranging from Year 6 to Year 13, with some students choosing to take on two, three or even all four of the reading lists! Hareem Ghouri, in Year 9, managed to complete the Bronze, Silver, Gold AND Platinum awards! Well done to all our intrepid readers and thank you for your thoughtful, reflective responses to the books you read.
