Year 7 Overview

Ethos of Year 7

Year 7 is a melting pot of keen, bright and enthusiastic girls from a variety of feeder schools across Yorkshire, as well as our own Junior School.

The girls come from a diverse range of financial and cultural backgrounds. The school creates an environment that enables the girls to work together and support each other from the moment they join the school. Our new intake progresses towards total cohesion, both within tutor groups and as a year group as a whole. The girls are encouraged to welcome new friendships whilst also remembering the value of established ones.

The residential trip to Caythorpe Court in the first half term is just one example of an event that aids this process. We also ensure that their experiences over the duration of the year allow them not only to develop their skills as working as part of a team, but also to allow them to work confidently on an independent basis.

Our Year 7 girls are keen and happy learners who want to join in everything and do everything. We offer the girls a rich programme of both curricular and extra-curricular activities, ensuring that all aspects of their potential have the opportunity to be developed.

The girls are encouraged to take an increasing level of responsibility for their own personal and academic wellbeing. As a team of staff we all help and support the girls, enabling them to acquire the skills to do so. All Year 7 curriculum staff contribute to this learning process, but more focused support is provided by the team of Form Tutors, Assistant Head of Year and the Head of Year.

We create an environment where the girls consider at all times how their actions have the ability to affect others in both a positive and negative way. We aim to instil tolerance for others; we nurture the girls to ensure that their self confidence and sense of self worth is continuously developed; we guide the girls in their actions to ensure that they have a disposition to humility rather than arrogance.

Our girls will always remember their Primary School roots but now have a clear identity, not only as a High School Girl, but also as a member of their WGHS Year Group.
