Learning Support

Ethos of the Department

The aim of the Learning Support Department is to assist and encourage all girls to flourish and achieve their full academic potential. A robust system is in place to identify any pupil who may be in need of support and all teaching staff work together to ensure appropriate provision. Pupils may be referred to the department but an open door policy exists in order to make the department available to all pupils. In Y7 all girls will attend a series of study skills sessions run by the Learning Support Department as part of the EDGE programme.

Girls will encounter a calm and supportive environment in Learning Support. From the start of Year 7 pupils are encouraged to be self-reflective and the focus is on skill development and independence which will impact positively across all areas of the curriculum. Departmental staff are experienced subject teachers with further qualifications in specialist areas and have up to date knowledge of current developments within the area of educational support. Liaison with external support agencies takes place when necessary. Regular meetings are held between Learning Support staff and subject/ pastoral staff to ensure quality of provision.

Areas of work include personal organisation, motivation, time management as well as targeted literacy, revision and exam strategies. In addition subject specific work can be supported in conjunction with subject staff. Girls are encouraged to consider their individual learning styles and to become adept at working smarter.  It is hoped skills acquired in the Department will become skills for life and enable girls to also fulfil their potential both at University and beyond.

Each girl is recognised as an individual and our goal is to guide and support your child in developing their own unique personal skill set in order to build confidence and self-esteem. The department is able to offer flexibility of provision, working on a one to one basis, within small groups or with a larger number of girls depending on need.
