This week, our Year 2 historians stepped back in time with a fantastic trip to the historic Sandal Castle. Under a beautifully clear and sunny sky, the children spent the day exploring the ruins and bringing their classroom learning to life.
There was much excitement as pupils crossed the drawbridge, imagining the bustling activity that would have taken place there centuries ago. The group showed great stamina as they climbed the many steps up to the keep, where they were rewarded with a bird’s-eye view of the surrounding landscape.
While standing in the ruins of the Great Hall, the children took a moment of quiet reflection to imagine how the grand space might have looked during its medieval heyday. It was also a treat to see the castle grounds bursting with the first signs of spring as the flowers begin to bloom.
The trip wasn’t just about exploration; it was also a wonderful opportunity for some outdoor art. Pupils completed detailed observational drawings of the motte and bailey structure, carefully identifying and labelling the different defensive features they could see. The teachers were incredibly impressed by the pupils’ keen eyes and their ability to notice the subtle architectural details of the site.
It was a brilliant day of discovery, fresh air, and hands-on history, a great time was truly had by all!
