Our Yorkshire Curriculum : Charles Waterton Workshop at Wakefield One

9th May 2025

our Year 1 children embarked on an educational and engaging visit to Wakefield One, where they participated in a  workshop focused on the life and work of the renowned naturalist, explorer, and conservationist, Charles Waterton. The session was led by a member of the Wakefield Council staff, providing our young learners with a valuable connection to their local history and our curriculum based on Yorkshire.

During the workshop, the children were captivated by the fascinating details shared about Charles Waterton and his significant contributions to the Wakefield area. They learned about his remarkable life, including his adventurous expeditions and his deep connection to his ancestral home, Waterton Hall. This local landmark, still a haven for wildlife today, played a central role in Waterton’s pioneering conservation efforts.

A highlight of the afternoon was the unique opportunity for the Year 1 children to get up close with examples of Waterton’s work. This hands-on experience allowed them to connect with history. Allowing them to get involved and see his work up close, the children even had the chance to try their hand at writing with traditional quill pens, providing them with an understanding of communication methods from Waterton’s era.

The Year 1 children thoroughly enjoying their time at Wakefield One. The workshop created a deeper understanding of an important figure in Wakefield’s history and sparked curiosity about the natural world and the legacy of conservation. It was a fantastic afternoon of learning and discovery, leaving a lasting impression on our youngest learners.
