Speech Day 2024

3rd July 2024

On Tuesday 2nd July Jubilee Hall was transformed with beautiful decorations and our children’s artwork, as our Wakefield Grammar Pre-preparatory school community gathered to celebrate for our third ever annual speech day.

We were honoured to be joined by The Right Worshipful the Mayor of the City of Wakefield Metropolitan District Mr Darren Byford, Chair of Governors Mr Martin Shevill, Chair of our Education Committee Mrs Penny Plumpton, and guest speaker Mr Steve Judge.

Head, Mrs Gill began our celebrations with an inspiring speech highlighting the importance of reading and emphasised the enchanting possibility of travelling through time and space via the captivating world of literature

As readers, and learners, we are not mere spectators; we are active participants in the stories that unfold before us and that we ourselves create”.

At Wakefield Grammar Pre-Preparatory School, we value character as much as academic success. Therefore, our Speech Day awards included Kindness Awards, Resilience Awards, and trophies for Effort and Perseverance, alongside traditional awards for Reading, Mathematics, and other subjects.

Well done to all of our children. Every child in Pre-prep has worked exceptionally hard, and they have achieved and surpassed their own goals this year. We are immensely proud of each one of you. As is our tradition in Pre-prep, all children in attendance patted themselves on the back, celebrating a “job well done.”

We enjoyed speeches from Head Boy Viraj and Head Girl Millie who shared their experience of being ‘Little Leaders’ and inspiring their fellow Pre-prep children. Subsequently, we listened to our Deputy Head Boy Zak and Deputy Head Girl Lucy who spoke about their favourite parts about their roles.

In a departure from tradition, this year Pre-prep children and staff decided to thank our esteemed guests not with flowers and wine, but through donations to The Aspinall Foundation, an environmental charity, with whom we sponsored gorillas. All our guests then received a special pack sharing the stories of their adopted gorillas.

Also in attendance at our Speech Day were representatives from our current school charities: Wakefield Hospice and Leeds Hospital Charities. Mrs Gill thanked these charities for the tireless work they have done to support our community over the last year, and announced the exciting news that our Pre-prep children have raised a staggering £10,000+ for the two charities this year.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating our incredible Year 1 and Year 2 children at Speech Day this year. We hope the event reminded you of just how special the children in our Pre-prep community truly are.
