As we reach the conclusion of this incredibly vibrant half-term, it is wonderful to reflect on the sheer variety of experiences our Junior pupils have enjoyed. From engineering marvels to culinary triumphs, QEGS and WGHS has been a hive of activity, creativity, and high-spirited competition.
Science Week kicked off with a bang as Year 3–6 pupils across the Foundation took on the ultimate engineering challenge in our Inter-House Bridge Building Competition. Armed with only paper and sellotape, teams raced against the clock to create structures capable of holding maximum weight. The tension was palpable during testing, but the Cave/Clayton team proved to be master architects; their record-breaking bridge held a staggering 9.24kg! This scientific discovery continued with an ‘Up Close & Personal’ animal workshop. To consolidate their learning on habitats and adaptations, pupils had the unforgettable experience of handling snakes, tarantulas, and turtles, seeing their classroom topics truly come to life through hands-on exploration.
In March, our Junior sections underwent a spectacular transformation into a living library for World Book Day 2026. Characters from Harry Potter, Matilda, and the world of Dr. Seuss stepped off the pages and into our classrooms. While the array of costumes was a sight to behold, the day was defined by our pupils’ genuine passion for storytelling. We extend a sincere thank you to our parents and pupils for the immense effort and ingenuity that went into making this day so memorable.
It has been a landmark term for performance across the Foundation. We were immensely proud of William and Zakariya for their incredible wins in the Speaking and Reading Competitions, where they showcased exceptional poise and confidence. The musical talent was equally impressive during the Junior Inter-House Music Competition; under the watchful eye of guest judge Mrs. Williams, students delivered brilliant solos and vocal numbers, resulting in a historic tied overall victory for Freeston and Bentley Houses. Congratulations to our Young Musicians of the Year, Rex (U9) and Oliver (U11), for their outstanding performances.
The celebrations continued with a marvellous showcase of our young female musicians. A huge thank you to Mr. Meredith for joining us to adjudicate such a fabulous final; we are so proud of every pupil who took to the stage, as your confidence, determination, and pure joy were truly inspiring. A special well-done goes to our winners: Yu Yen Wu, named Lower School Young Musician of the Year, and Fei Fei Wu, who took the title for the Upper School.
In the kitchen, the heat was on for our very own Junior Bake Off. Contestants showcased impressive technique while crafting sweet and savoury scones, and after much deliberation by the judges from Holroyd Howe, Leena was crowned the winner for her exceptional savoury bake. On the sports field, the sun shone for our Inter-House Cross-Country competition. It was inspiring to see the determination and stamina on display from every runner, with a huge well done to Cave/Clayton for taking the overall trophy in a brilliant display of House spirit.
Finally, our dining halls have provided a gateway to global cultures. We continued our Chinese New Year festivities with a delicious spread of traditional dishes, followed by a spectacular Foundation-wide Eid lunch. From flavourful Chicken Jalfrezi to fresh Khobez bread, these moments provided a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together, share a meal, and celebrate the diverse traditions that make our school so special.
More recently, we held our fantastic Junior Spring concerts and it was nothing short of spectacular! From the youngest voices in our Pre-Prep KS1 Choir at the WGHS Junior concert to all our talented Junior boys and girls, our pupils proved they are ‘treble’ the fun when they take to the stage. Every pupil showcased incredible talent, from soaring vocals to fantastic instrumental skills across a wide range of disciplines.
The evenings reached a powerful crescendo with a grand finale involving all the pupils that certainly blew the audience away. It was a wonderful opportunity to see the pupils from across the Junior sections performing with such confidence and harmony. Thank you to everyone who joined us for each unforgettable evening, a night our pupils will surely treasure for a long time to come.
