Foundation Students Triumph at Rotary STEM Tournament

12th March 2026

Teams from QEGS and WGHS joined forces to tackle a complex engineering brief: designing and building a bridge structure capable of supporting heavy loads. The task came with a significant added challenge – the bridge had to feature a fully functional mechanical system to allow it to open and close.

The competition required students to combine structural stability with mechanical precision. Working against the clock, teams had to ensure their moving parts could operate smoothly without compromising the strength of the bridge under testing.

From the initial design phase through to the final load-bearing trials, the teams demonstrated high-level problem-solving and technical skill to meet the tournament’s rigorous standards.

After a day of intense designing and testing, the KS5 Advanced team – comprised of Lucy, Buba, Adam, and Ihan – emerged as the overall winners.

Their design was recognised for its impressive mechanical engineering and durability.
