The QEGS U16 Rugby squad produced a spirited performance in their School Sports Magazine National Cup Round of 16 fixture, narrowly losing out to a strong Glenalmond College side in challenging conditions.
The match began brightly for QEGS, with Centre Smith opening the scoring through the boot to give the hosts an early lead. Glenalmond responded with a powerful driving maul, crossing for the first try of the afternoon to edge ahead. QEGS continued to apply pressure and added a further penalty, taking the score to 6–7 in a tightly contested opening period.
With the teams evenly matched for much of the game, the contest remained finely balanced. However, Glenalmond’s superior size and pace eventually began to tell, and they broke through the QEGS defence to score an unconverted try, before adding another to extend their lead.
QEGS had the final say, showing great character and determination to finish strongly with a well-earned try of their own, bringing the final score to 17–11.
Despite the result, the squad can be extremely proud of their effort, discipline and resilience against high-quality opposition. It was a competitive and hard-fought cup tie that showcased the team’s progress and potential this season.
Well done to all players and staff involved in what was an excellent National Cup campaign.
