Year 5 Explore Victorian Life at Armley Mills

29th April 2025

This week, Year 5 visited Armley Mills in Leeds to support their learning about the Victorian era. The trip provided a valuable opportunity to explore what life was like for children during that time.

The day began in a recreated Victorian classroom, where pupils experienced the strict routines and expectations that would have been the norm in the 19th century. It was a chance to reflect on how different school life is today compared to the past.

Later, the children explored the mill itself, learning about the types of jobs young people would have done and the conditions they worked in. Dressed in period clothing, pupils took part in a range of activities and reenactments that helped bring the history to life in a hands-on, meaningful way.

Staff were pleased with how thoughtfully and respectfully the children approached the experience. It was a useful and memorable day that added real depth to their current history topic.
